“Training with HelpMeSee will make all the difference in building my confidence to perform safe and efficient cataract surgery. I would like to use this knowledge and skill on cataract surgery in order to help those in need, especially those patients who are living In rural areas where there is limited resource. I am asking for your financial assistance to help me.”

Liyou

“Ethiopia has one of the highest prevalence of cataract anywhere in the world. I am in my second year of residency and on the verge of starting cataract surgery. So, if I get the chance to train with HelpMeSee, it would help my patients as well as the future practice of my career"

Bezawit

“I am confident that with your support, I can complete my training and become a skilled cataract surgeon and contribute to the mission of eliminating cataract blindness. After completion of my training, I will return back to my community and provide service for the millions of blind to decrease the load of blindness due to cataract.”

HelpMeSee has kicked off a campaign to raise vital funds to cover the cost of training students from Africa to become cataract specialists.

Upon completion of their training, they will return to their community to restore sight to thousands who are living without it.

Did you know cataract is the largest single cause of blindness in Africa? There are over 2 million Africans living with blindness at this very moment because of untreated cataract. This does not even account for the additional 6 million Africans who are living with severe visual impairment because of cataract.

Cataract surgery takes as little as 10 minutes to perform, and yet these people remain blind because there is little to no access to surgery where they live. The problem is a severe lack of cataract specialists where millions of Africans live and work.

Right now, more than 600,000 Africans go blind from cataract every year. Sadly, this results in loss of work, loss of independence, financial struggles, higher mortality rates, and little hope for their future.

Trained cataract specialists can end this catastrophe on the African continent. This is why we believe this project is vital, and we hope you will too.

Below are the faces and stories of just three (of many) students who desperately want to be trained so they can return to their communities and restore sight.

HelpMeSee covers the cost of thousands of trainees every year because of the generosity of our supporters. Our goal is to raise the funds to get these students trained to serve their own communities.

They are waiting to be trained so they can help their fellow Africans get their sight back – will you help them make it possible?

When you make any donation to support these students, you will be signed up to receive exclusive updates on their progress, training, and impact.

Will you believe in one of our students and help get them trained?

At HelpMeSee, we know what an army of trained cataract specialists is capable of, and whether it's cataract surgery or fishing - training is the key.

Our mission is to train as many specialists as possible and send them back to their communities to help those living in darkness.

One cataract specialist can perform around 10,000 cataract surgeries in their lifetime (or more) in the communities in which they live.

There’s an old adage that says, Give a person a fish and you’ll feed them for a day, teach a person to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.’

A few years ago, we came to the conclusion that with the backlog of people facing blindness due to cataract around the world, the previous model of simply performing cataract surgeries did not allow us to reach the number of people needed to bring about systemic change.

That is why at HelpMeSee, rather than helping people for just a day, our model is to train people to help others for a lifetime.
